New Scoring Tables Now 1 Month Old

The new WMA scoring tables for the Throws Pentathlon and the new USATF Ultra Weight Pentathlon have now been in effect since May 1. They are not widely available but will be posted on the usatfmasters.org website shortly on the Throwing Events Page so that you can download and use them.

Getting Started

Hello Fellow Throwers,

I plan to use this space to communicate with you about matters of interest -- meets, performances, issues that come up, announcements, etc. This first post is an introduction and so I'll start by introducing myself to those of you who don't know me.

I'm Jerry Bookin-Weiner, USATF Masters Throwing Events Coordinator. I'm currently an M63 thrower who is sidelined by some serious back issues that hit during the Oshkosh nationals last summer. So far the docs say no surgery (which I think is good) but I'm also not nearly ready to start serious training again any time soon.

I live in Columbia, MD (where we are dealing with a massive blizzard as I type this post). My day job is as Director of Study Abroad and Outreach for AMIDEAST (America-Mideast Educational and Training Services, Inc.), a Washington-based US non-profit that does education and training work in 13 countries in the Arab world. My role is to organize study abroad programs for American college students in five of those countries -- Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco and Tunisia. It keeps me plenty busy and also puts me on the road quite a bit (typically two or three trips to the Middle East and North Africa each semester).

I've been a thrower since the 8th grade, though I took a vacation from 1980 to 1996. I started as a shot putter, took up the discus in high school (and still think of myself primarily as a discus thrower), but now am probably most competitive in the hammer and weight.

My job as Throwing Events Coordinator is to chair the Throwing Events Subcommittee and to help the Games Committee put on the throwing events at our National Championships. I also work very closely with the sites we select for the Throwing Events Championships where the Throws Pentathlon, Ultraweight Pentathlon, Weight Throw (in 2010 only) and Superweight Championships are contested.

If you have any concerns or questions about the throwing events, please contact me and I'll do what I can to respond quickly with answers.

Throw Far!

Jerry Bookin-Weiner
